The American Sunbathing Association (A.S.A.), prospered during the next eight

years, but in 1941 the onset of World War II disrupted the nudist movement. Following
the assault on Pearl Harbor, many nudists went off to war, resulting in the close of many
Bare resorts. The movement managed to survive as a result of continuing publications of the
Fkk. Eventually, the magazine’s name changed to Sunshine & Health. 24

After World War II nudism slowly began to take hold again, reemerging as a
More powerful movement. Dlsley Boone, nicknamed Uncle Danny, continued to be the leader
By now, 1946, Boone monopolized the whole naturist movement.
The American Sunbathing Association was one of nine interlocking corporations
As noted by Johnson, other organizations included: The
Sunshine & Health magazine, The Sunshine Book Company, Sunshine Park Inc,

students to participate in art classes outside at Sunshine Park. Boone’s unwillingness to
delegate any of his authority to others resulted in many disgruntled members. 25 Boone
Commanded all of the mailing lists and managed to obtain enough proxies to outvote
everyone, thus enabling him to control the election of officials?6 When members

requested an audit of the novels, Boone turned them down stating the expense was not
Warranted? 7 Struggle towards Boone continued to brew on the list of board members of the
A.S.A. The members successfully elected a new leader, Reed Suplee, only to be
disappointed by his resignation a month or two after due to Boone’s unwillingness to let him
review the novels. Finally in 1951, the A.S.A. backed by most of the organization members,
Driven Boone to resign. Boone continued to influence the Fkk movement by staying
active in board issues and management of the corporations. He introduced a fresh
magazine, S.U.N., which stands for So/ . Strategies were also declared
for a new international naturist organization. In spite of Boone’s resignation, he’s still
considered the primary man accountable for the A.S.A., which continued on to become the
dominant naturist organization in America. By the end of the 20th century, an estimated 15
million people in 22 states were engaged in Social Nudism.
Organization has since changed its name to The American Association of Nude Recreation
(A.A.N.R.), and now claims more than fifty thousand members? 8

The subject of Social Nudism generates many differing outlooks. Some people find
the behavior deviant or unusual, using labels such as wrong, unethical, and anti-social,
when referring to people choosing to engage in this lifestyle.
Conduct as moral, ethical, and socially appropriate, insisting that social nudism functions to
enhance total well being. Where did these beliefs originate, and why do they persist?
Much of what forms our societies and laws stems from religious perspectives. Although
this study does not focus on the practices, theories, or beliefs of one particular religion, it
does acknowledge the basis of religion as really being a major contributor to modern views
on nudism.
During early formative years of religious teachings, dominant views in Greek and
Roman cultures expressed physical matter as evil and just spiritual things as great. This was
known as Gnosticism, and symbolized a negative view of what God had meant. It states
in the Bible, the book of Genesis 1:31, that “God saw all that he’d made, and it was very

good.” Many Christians believe this passage to be accurate but only in the circumstance of occurring
before the fall of Adam and . The emergence of sin locations heavy a burden, specifically
Remorse and shame, upon human beings. It wasn’t until Adam and Eve sinned that shame
would become a major controlling factor in peoples lives.

Many psychologists believe that shame is the
source of low self esteem, abuse, and illnesses for example depression, paranoia, and sexual
Habits. Based on Pastor Ted Roberts “Shame is a feeling of deep abasement that
convinces me there’s something essentially wrong with me …and that’s a killer. “

Hartman Fithian & Johnson, noted inside their publication, Naturist Society, that many religious leaders

are responsible for connecting shame, with nudity and sin. By way of example, the constant
reminder that pre marital sex and masturbation are incorrect, and therefore sinful, entails that
these acts are black. Women, as opposed to men, are more readily criticized for
engaging in sex before marriage and hence more prone to feelings of shame. Yet
deserving of shame? Maybe in the eyes of the church the answer is yes. More significantly
